Journalism sucks…

Take a look at CNN’s website. On the front page of the website, this headline perverts my eyes:

“Spears will lose custody of children.”

During a time when America’s sons and daughters are at War…When the Blackwater USA controversy has further ingrained the stereotype of the arrogant American who breaks laws and does whatever he pleases…When all of this takes great precedent over all, what news are we greeted with by the Cable News Leader?

Give me a break.

Who cares about the dead troops in Iraq? Britney Spears has a new haircut!

Congratulations CNN. You have joined the ranks of the NY Post, Fox News and Matt Groening’s The Simpsons. Yet, CNN is far from standing alone. Sensationalism reigns supreme. Ratings are King and controversy is what sells. I would and could expect this from tabloid magazine but this trend has spilled over into notable news outlets, sport magazines and any genre imaginable to the human mind. People turn to The Daily Show for their news. Perhaps the tragedy in this is that The Daily Show is one of the very few avenues where both sides of the story, left and right, are told.

In it, they list 10 assumptions of journalists. It is quite amusing. For instance.

1. We know the truth, and we’re here to impart it to you.

7. We’re smarter than you; we can become experts in any subject.

Think for a moment. When was the last time that you received intelligent, impartial news? Money dictates the news. Don’t believe that your news is bias? Grow up. Fox News is well documented in regards to their controversies.

No type of genre is safe

Halo 3 was the most anticipated video game of the year. Halo 2 received a 9.8 rating out of 10 from IGN and a perfect 10 from EGM and Game Informer. With a proven success rate, it would be thought that reporting would be thorough and very informative. Kat Mowbray of Aeropause reports that in Time Magazine Lev Grossman calls gamers ‘lonely and alienated.’ It is also reported that he called Halo ‘ghetto.’

This confused me. Halo is Ghetto. Last time I checked, a video game wasn’t part of a disenfranchised group of people living in poor conditions and housing. Nor was it sound to use such terms in a acclaimed magazine to describe frankly, anything.

In addition to this, I guess Halo’s lonely and alienated fans must have some common cause. Gross sales from Halo 3’s opening day broke the record for highest grossing opening day in entertainment history with an astronomical 170 million dollars in sales. Something tells me that Halo can’t be too ghetto.

Halo may be doing great…
