The Cost Of Image

11.5 Million Dollars to be awarded to Anucha Browne Sanders for punitive damages in sexual harrassment case against the NY Knicks

Belichick fined 500,000 for cheating in NFL Games

NBA fines Tim Hardaway 100,000 for hating gay people.

Ok, I made the last one up. With all the money that is spent yearly to repay fines and to maintain the image of the major sports, one has to wonder, ‘What is the cost of a good image?’

Granted, the 11.5 million award given in the sexual harrassment case is very different from someone getting fined for wearing Reeboks instead of Nike; however, one has to wonder how does all of the money awarded and fined help resolve the problems or issues at hand.

Will sexual harassment cease because of a sizeable lump sum? It is to be highly doubted. Does anyone really believe that the Patriots have not and will not look for alternate methods to gain an competitve edge? Let’s get real. And believe it or not, I doubt that Tim Hardaway will be at any gay marriage rights movements.

What type of society do we live in when we feel that the only resolution to our problems revolves around money. Fines do not and cannot hurt spoiled, million athletes. We, as fans, have suffered because of the Patriots and their nefarious acts; yet, the greater disservice remains with the NFL. The NFL would rather remove all evidence than have to suffer a fate that the NBA has with its tarnished image because of Tim Donoghy. Where’s the integrity?

We, as fans, deserve better.

No fan can relate to an athlete. Ticket prices are astronomical. The normal blue-collar worker has a better chance of winning the daily lottery than to be able to afford 50 yard line tickets. We also get rewarded with spoiled athletes who flaunt that a fine will not hurt them or their standard of living.

What do I propose? When privileged, spoiled people do asanine acts, make them do community service and have to donate their dollars directly to education or their specific hometowns. Humble these athletes who feel that they are above the normal standards of their common man. I understand that fines are used for charitable causes; however, an athlete’s presence may actually mature the athlete and create greater good in the community.

A Requiem For Journalism

Journalism sucks…

Take a look at CNN’s website. On the front page of the website, this headline perverts my eyes:

“Spears will lose custody of children.”

During a time when America’s sons and daughters are at War…When the Blackwater USA controversy has further ingrained the stereotype of the arrogant American who breaks laws and does whatever he pleases…When all of this takes great precedent over all, what news are we greeted with by the Cable News Leader?

That Britney Spears is losing custody of her children

Give me a break.

Who cares about the dead troops in Iraq? Britney Spears has a new haircut!

Congratulations CNN. You have joined the ranks of the NY Post, Fox News and Matt Groening’s The Simpsons. Yet, CNN is far from standing alone. Sensationalism reigns supreme. Ratings are King and controversy is what sells. I would and could expect this from tabloid magazine but this trend has spilled over into notable news outlets, sport magazines and any genre imaginable to the human mind. People turn to The Daily Show for their news. Perhaps the tragedy in this is that The Daily Show is one of the very few avenues where both sides of the story, left and right, are told.

Note this great article.

In it, they list 10 assumptions of journalists. It is quite amusing. For instance.

1. We know the truth, and we’re here to impart it to you.

7. We’re smarter than you; we can become experts in any subject.

Think for a moment. When was the last time that you received intelligent, impartial news? Money dictates the news. Don’t believe that your news is bias? Grow up. Fox News is well documented in regards to their controversies.

There’s no crying or truth in journalism”

No type of genre is safe

Halo 3 was the most anticipated video game of the year. Halo 2 received a 9.8 rating out of 10 from IGN and a perfect 10 from EGM and Game Informer. With a proven success rate, it would be thought that reporting would be thorough and very informative. Kat Mowbray of Aeropause reports that in Time Magazine Lev Grossman calls gamers ‘lonely and alienated.’ It is also reported that he called Halo ‘ghetto.’

This confused me. Halo is Ghetto. Last time I checked, a video game wasn’t part of a disenfranchised group of people living in poor conditions and housing. Nor was it sound to use such terms in a acclaimed magazine to describe frankly, anything.

In addition to this, I guess Halo’s lonely and alienated fans must have some common cause. Gross sales from Halo 3’s opening day broke the record for highest grossing opening day in entertainment history with an astronomical 170 million dollars in sales. Something tells me that Halo can’t be too ghetto.

Halo may be doing great…

…but journalism still sucks
